Little Girls in the Kitchen
The other day my girls asked, as they often do, if they could do some baking. If you don’t have eight and six year olds around the house, let me translate that question for you:
“Hey mom, can we get the cocoa powder, flour, honey, baking soda, cinnamon and vanilla down, mix them in the wrong proportions, touch the white cabinets with chocolate fingers and then bake the barely edible concoction in the oven?”
And my typical response to this request is (surprisingly) almost always, “sure”.
Although my eight year old is at the age now where she wanted to pull up our favorite coconut flour recipe and follow it to a T, my six year old had other plans. When we pulled her chocolate brick out of the oven, we had to drown it with butter and honey to make it edible.
She was so proud.
The Right Environment
This is the environment I strive to create in our little farmhouse. Learning happens through trial, error and experimentation.
I let them get out the fabric and make little dresses for the dolls. Every cardboard box is an opportunity.
A lot of times I complain about the craziness and their little creative explosions all over the house, but the messes really only take a few minutes to clean up.
I love letting my kids explore their interests in (almost) any way they want to, and kitchens are meant for messes and creating.
Keeping it Minimal
This is the main reason I like to keep everything so minimal in our home. With four (almost five) kids, the clutter can get out of control, and I don’t need anything to add to the stress.
I love to keep the colors and patterns neutral too. It creates a little sense of peace in our otherwise chaotic home. Since our home is only 1180 square feet, I take clutter very seriously. Small space living doesn’t allow for a lot of storage and extra stuff.
I wanted to collect a few items together to spruce up a small kitchen for the autumn season, that would be fresh and new, yet stay in the beautiful warm neutrals that I love so much.
I picked out some cozy grays, soft whites and wood tones, for warmth.
I love putting together little collections like this!
My Fall Kitchen Refresh Picks from World Market
I added a striped linen towel for a little pattern and wicker baskets for texture. There is a ceramic soup crock for those hearty fall meals, and this gray washed cotton smock. I love the vintage feel of the accordion wall rack, which would be perfect to hang
linen dish towels.
The wood chair would be the perfect furniture for small spaces. I would love to put it up to our small kitchen island for in-kitchen dining.
Everything in a small space needs to be both functional and beautiful. Hyacinth baskets fit the bill for both. I was thinking of storing potatoes, or other dried goods, in these.
These items, paired with a few white pumpkins when they are ready to be harvested, would be all a little farmhouse kitchen needs to feel fresh and new for the fall season.
I’m definitely going to make a trip down to my local World Market to browse some of these items and cozy up our kitchen this fall.
