We have always been aware of avoiding chemicals in our own yard. That’s obvious by all the dandelions and plantain! However, I never gave a second thought to the fields my kids were playing on.
Stonyfield is committed to healthier people and a healthier planet. This can’t just stop with the food we eat. Pesticides sprayed on fields can get absorbed directly through the skin, the body’s largest organ.
Kids are especially vulnerable to the negative effects of these harsh chemicals, because of the larger surface-to-volume ratio of their skin compared to adults. Research shows that these chemicals can have negative effects on the neurological, respiratory, immune, and endocrine systems!
Stonyfield has inspired me to make a change with my family and town. We already love growing vegetables and herbs in our own organic garden, and now I’m ready to spread the word. I used to let my kiddos tromp around barefoot all over the fields and parks in our town all spring and summer long, possibly on fields that had been sprayed with these harmful chemicals! I have always known about the importance of giving them organic food to avoid chemicals in their little bodies, but I can’t believe it never occurred to me how important organic field management is!
We have come along away
It’s interesting to me how far we’ve come in changing our eating habits over the last 35 years. People are more conscious of food and nutrition now more than ever. Organic foods are widely available and at a reasonable cost. But, why is it that no one is aware of the toxins that go in through the skin?
In honor of their 35th anniversary, Stonyfield is looking to increase awareness with the StonyFIELDS #PlayFree Initiative. Over the next 3 years 35 communities will be sleeted to have a park or sports field converted to organic field management. This three year and half million dollar initiative designed to better the lives of the most vulnerable in our country!
Over 26 million kids play on fields every year that have been treated with herbicides, insecticides and fungicides. This needs to change!

Take Action in your own Community
Stonyfield is looking to make a change in fields and play areas all over the country. Head on over to nominate a park in your own town to convert it from a conventional field to an organic one.
There are two different donation programs available.
One is a community donation that is for towns that are already taking steps to convert to organic. The selected towns will receive $5,000 to use toward the landscaping and tools necessary to convert a field to organic. Residents, city employees and elected officials can all nominate their town for this donation.
The other is a Grass Roots donation to help promote education and awareness in towns where perhaps the elected officials aren’t quite ready to start taking the steps toward organic policy. If you think the residents in your town could benefit from learning more about the organic movement for field management, your community organization is perfect for a nomination in this category! Applicants for this one need to be a non-profit organization.
More information about these donations, and to nominate your own town can be found HERE.
I hope you will join this movement by nominating your town . You can also start by following Stonyfield’s tips and taking four simple steps to convert your yard and garden to organic! The StonyFIELDS #playfree website is full of helpful ideas.
