This easy blueberry sauce recipe is one of our favorite ways to enjoy fresh or frozen blueberries. It’s a simple, sweet, and delicious topping for yogurt, ice cream, pound cakes, pancakes, and more.

A spoon covered in blueberry sauce over a pint jar of blueberry sauce.

When I mix up ricotta cheese pancakes or sourdough pancakes, it isn’t easy to choose between a fruit topping and maple syrup. Both are delicious.

Yet this blueberry topping is sweettart, and silky smooth. Plus, it’s a serving of fruit and a delicious way to use fresh blueberries.

Whether in the height of blueberry season or leaning on our frozen blueberry stores in the midst of cold winter days, we often turn to this delicious homemade blueberry sauce for its bright flavor and versatility.

Serve it over pancakes, absolutely! But you can also top sourdough French toast or sourdough crepes. Or swirl it into your morning yogurt with some rustic granola for a luxurious and nutritious breakfast.

Need an appetizer idea? Spoon this sauce over a block of homemade cream cheese and serve with crackers (much like I do with cream cheese and jalapeรฑo jelly). It’s fast and easy, and everyone loves it.

For dessert, try topping the very best homemade cheesecake with this blueberry sauce for a juicy, sweet spin. Or drizzle over a bowl of vanilla ice cream for a decadent treat.

Plus, it’s quick and easy to prepare, and leftovers keep well in the refrigerator for later.

Step 3: In a separate small bowl, mix the water and cornstarch. Pour the cornstarch slurry into the simmering blueberries and stir.

Thickened blueberries over the stove.

Step 4: Reduce the heat and continue cooking until the sauce is thickened, about 2 – 3 minutes. Remove from heat, serve, and enjoy!

Tips

  • Mash sparingly with a potato masher or give the mixture a quick pulse with an immersion blender for a less chunky sauce.
  • Test the sauce and adjust the sweetness to your liking. The blueberries add their own natural sweetness.
  • For a thin sauce or a thick sauce, adjust with more or less corn starch in your cornstarch slurry.
  • Add a tablespoon of butter at the end for more gloss to your sauce.
  • Try a splash of vanilla extract or some ground cinnamon to adjust the flavor.
  • Make extra to use through the week! Just cool it, pop it in the fridge, and enjoy with your favorite dishes!
  • Homemade sauces like this one make thoughtful gifts. Fill a Mason jar, wrap it with some ribbon and a note, and you’re set!

Recipe FAQs

How should blueberry sauce be stored?

Let the sauce cool before storing. Keep in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one month or freeze in a freezer-safe container for several months. To thaw frozen blueberry sauce, just set it in the fridge overnight or carefully reheat it on the stovetop in a saucepan.

Can I use frozen blueberries?

Absolutely. I find they work just as well as fresh berries.

Are there other fruits that can be used?

Yes! Swap the berries out entirely, or use a blend of blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, etc.

Would a different sweetener work?

You can use brown sugar for added molasses flavor. Alternatively, you could try honey or maple syrup. The amount of cornstarch may need to be adjusted so the sauce doesnโ€™t turn out too thin.
