Made with simple ingredients, this delicious homemade honey mustard is a great dipping sauce or spread for your favorite foods, and the perfect dressing to spruce up a garden salad.

Pouring honey mustard dressing onto a salad.

Who doesn’t love a creamy honey mustard sauce? With its sweet and tangy flavor, honey mustard is well-loved by children and adults alike.

Yet buying it from the store can be a gamble – they’re often too sweet and syrupy, with a long ingredient list full of preservatives, artificial flavors, and corn syrup.

Making your own dressing is satisfying, healthy, and delicious. You know what’s in it and can tailor it to suit your taste. There are lots of recipes out there, so it’s great to have a go-to, back-pocket recipe instead of scrambling to find one on the spot. Maybe this will be it?

This creamy homemade honey mustard sauce has the perfect balance of sweet and tangy and is our family’s favorite. The homemade mayo gives it a smooth, thick, creamy consistency, and raw, local honey plus a squeeze of lemon gives a heightened fresh taste.

I keep a batch in my fridge to use for green salads or crispy, pan-fried salmon, but you’ll also find us using it as a creamy dipping sauce for homemade fried chicken, sweet potato fries, fresh veggies, soft sourdough pretzels, or these easy salmon croquettes. (And so much more.)

It’s one of the kids’ favorite condiments because it’s so creamy and perfectly sweet, which I can feel good about since it’s naturally sweetened. It can also be spiced up with cayenne pepper, hot honey, or Dijon mustard if you prefer more of a kick.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

Simple – There are no complicated ingredients. While I use homemade mayo, you can easily use whatever your favorite brand is from the grocery store. This is very easily made with pantry staples.

Healthier – This is the number one reason I love this recipe. The ingredient list is short, real, and healthy. It’s naturally sweetened and contains zero additives and no corn syrup.

Delicious – Real ingredients boost the flavors of this tasty sauce, and the sweet-to-sour ratio is just right.

Ingredients

Small bowls of mayo, mustard, and honey, a lemon, salt, and a jar of garlic powder on a counter.

Mayonnaise – I keep homemade mayo on hand, not only because it is delicious, but also because I can avoid additives and seed oils.

Lemon – If needed, you can substitute a drop of lemon essential oil in place of the fresh-squeezed lemon.

Honey – Any kind of honey will work, though I highly recommend local, raw honey.

How to Make Homemade Honey Mustard

Mustard, honey, mayo, lemon juice and spices in a mason jar.

Step 1: Add all ingredients to a blender and mix until smooth. If working without a blender, just add the ingredients to a mixing bowl and whisk thoroughly until it’s shiny and smooth.

Blending up ingredients in a mason jar.

Step 2: Pour into a glass container with an airtight lid (mason jars work well) and use it as a salad dressing, sandwich spread, or dipping sauce.

Tips

  • Try to use local honey if possible.
  • Olive oil and avocado oil are the best oils for salad dressing due to their health benefits and high omega-3 content. Many honey mustard sauces have inflammatory oils like vegetable, canola, corn, or soybean oil.
  • You can use one drop of lemon essential oil in place of the lemon juice if preferred.
  • I find the flavor is best after it sits in the fridge overnight.
  • For a more typical honey mustard salad dressing consistency, add a very small splash of olive oil and vinegar (white or apple cider vinegar) and whisk.

Recipe FAQs

How do I store homemade honey mustard dressing?

Homemade honey mustard should be stored in an airtight container and placed in the fridge. If made with homemade mayo, the dressing should be used within 2 weeks. Store-bought mayo will increase the shelf-life.

What is honey mustard made of?

Primarily honey and mustard, but mayonnaise is often added to make it creamier.

What is the ratio of honey to mustard?

It is typically one part mustard to one part honey.

Can I use Dijon mustard instead of yellow mustard?

Sure! It’ll add to the sweetness while also giving it a sharper flavor.

How should I serve honey mustard?

You’d be surprised how versatile honey mustard is! Use it as a sauce for grilled chicken breast, burgers, pork chops, BBQ sandwiches, or tacos. Use it as a salad dressing, in a pasta salad, or in place of the mayo and mustard in a potato salad. Or use it as a dipping sauce for chicken tenders, French fries, raw veggies, soft pretzels, fried shrimp, or grilled cheese.
