Add the canned tomatoes to a large mixing bowl. Use your hands or a potato masher to break up the tomatoes into small pieces until you reach a crushed tomato texture.
Heat a large pot over medium heat and add the olive oil. Once hot, add the garlic and sauté for 1 - 2 minutes until fragrant. Add the red pepper flakes and sauté for another minute.
Add the tomatoes, salt, and basil leaves to the pot. Stir to combine.
Once the mixture begins to simmer, reduce the heat to low and cook for 1 hour, stirring every 10 or so minutes. The sauce will thicken and reduce slightly.
Once the sauce is done, serve as desired with pasta, chicken, meatballs, and more!

If you like, you can extend the cooking time of this sauce. The longer you cook it, the more depth of flavor it will have.
Avoid using cast iron for this recipe as it can react with the acidity of the tomatoes. Opt for enameled cast iron, a ceramic coated pot, or stainless steel.
