Orange icing is the perfect, easy recipe to elevate your baked goods. Homemade frosting adds an incredible amount of flavor to any dessert, and this orange icing is no exception.

This orange icing is easy, delicious, and uses only two ingredients. I created this glaze for my orange cinnamon rolls. But there are so many creative ways to use this icing.

The burst of citrus flavor is wonderful glazed over sourdough donuts, pound cake, or bundt cake. We even enjoy it as a dip with sourdough graham crackers.

All you need are oranges and a little powdered sugar to create this indulgent glaze.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

Delicious – There is something about citrus flavors and the sweetness of sugar. It’s why my cranberry orange cookies are always a hit.

Simple – You don’t need to be a trained pastry chef to create beautiful, delicious desserts. All you need are two simple ingredients that you likely have on hand.

Versatile – A good orange icing elevates any baked good. This icing would be divine on a sourdough pastry braid or sourdough coffee cake.

Ingredients

A bowl of powdered sugar and two oranges.

Powdered sugar – This is also called confectioners’ sugar or icing sugar.

Orange juice – Fresh squeezed fruit juice gives the icing real orange flavor (as opposed to orange extract). Use a citrus zester and fresh oranges. Cara Cara oranges are a good option for extra orange flavor.

How to Make Orange Icing

Powdered sugar in a bowl with orange juice poured in.

Step 1: In a large bowl or glass measuring cup, whisk the powdered sugar with freshly squeezed orange juice until smooth. You can use a hand mixer or stand mixer with the whisk or paddles attachment on low speed or medium speed.

Step 2: Drizzle the glaze onto room temperature baked goods. Enjoy!

Tips

  • Use freshly squeezed orange juice for the best flavor. For a thicker texture icing, start with just 1 tablespoon of orange juice.
  • It is helpful to sift the powdered sugar if there are a lot of clumps. It will help with the smooth desired consistency.
  • Store any leftover icing in an airtight container or in a bowl covered with a piece of plastic wrap. It is best to refrigerate it.
  • Make an orange buttercream frosting by subbing orange juice in my lemon buttercream frosting recipe. This adds unsalted butter and heavy cream for a thicker frosting perfect for cupcakes.
  • Add a little vanilla extract for additional flavor.

Recipe FAQs

How do you make orange icing drizzle?

To make a thicker icing that will drizzle, you can add a bit of butter to thicken the icing. Start with 2 tablespoons of softened butter and blend it well into the icing.

What’s the best orange to use for glaze?

You want a sweet orange for a glaze. Navel or Cara Cara oranges are the best.

What is the difference between icing and glaze?

A glaze is thinner than an icing. It all depends on how much liquid you add.
