Apple Cider Donuts FAQs

What if I don’t have a donut pan?

Muffin tins work well as a substitute for a donut pan. Even though you won’t have the classic donut shape, it’ll still be a similar size. You can also make a ball with aluminum foil to place in the middle to give more of a classic donut shape.

How should homemade donuts be stored?

Fresh donuts are the best, so I recommend eating them the same day. If there are leftovers, store them in an airtight container at room temperature for 2-3 days. They’re best if you warm them up before eating.

Can I use apple juice instead of cider?

Apple juice doesn’t have as much flavor, so I still recommend reducing it. You can add some apple pie spice to the apple juice to kick the flavor up a notch, too!

Can I make these gluten-free?

You could try using a gluten-free 1:1 flour. I expect the texture will be a bit denser, but they should still be delicious!

How are apple cider donuts different from regular donuts?

The difference is in the concentrated apple cider, which adds so much flavor to the batter.

Yum! I used home-milled hard red whole wheat, and cut the sugar to 1/4th in the toppings. (And we always double cinnamon in any recipe). Whole family loved them. Thank you!

Family loved these. I reduced the Apple cider 1 day before making the recipe. Dunking the top in melted butter and then in the cinnamon sugar mixture made these irresistible!

I just finished making my first batch of Apple cider donuts and I am thrilled with the result! My husband is a fan of yeast donuts but gave very high marks to this donut too. The recipe is easy to follow. I did find that it took more time and a higher heat to reduce the cider. Other than that, no surprises. I bought a donut pan at Walmart for under $10. I will likely buy another, as the batter thickened while waiting for the first batch to finish. 10/10 This recipe is a keeper.

My family all loved these! I actually lowered the sweetener content by replacing the brown sugar with 3 tablespoons of maple syrup and the white sugar, reducing it to 1/8 cup. I also used soft, white wheat, fresh milled flour. I added 1 more tsp of vanilla and a dash of nutmeg and allspice to help compensate for some of the sweetener I took out. They were terrific! Although it was a little bit more of a muffin texture, since I did switch up some ingredients. We didn’t mind – they were terrific!

Hi Lisa, I just ordered my donut pan from Amazon.
I am so excited to make donuts. My husband will not touch a donut as he is a health nut., but beings I can bake them and they will be made by me, it should work. Ty for all of your recipes, I love following you.

I made these in my muffin top pan. Added 2 minutes and waited 5 minutes to cool in pan. They are delicious. I’ll make them again for Thanksgiving morning. Thank you Lisa.

Making a double batch today so I can share at church tomorrow.

  8. Jen says:

I have some apples I canned. How do you think I could sub them for the apple cider? Should I cook them down?

  9. Steph says:

Would there be a way to make these sourdough doughnuts?

my kiddos made this recipe ( 14 & 15 yr olds) and it turned out fantastic! It’s simple and quick, so they can make it any time. Perfect for the Fall weather. We doubled the recipe so we could make enough for the cousins that were visiting- but then overfilled the donut pan, so they turned out more like muffins- but everyone loved them anyway.
